ARTIST STATEMENT
My artistic practice revolves around hands-on mediums, with a strong focus on documentary photography and weaving. In my photography, I create images of human connections that capture powerful moments in life. Whether through the lens of a camera or the textures of different fibers, I am constantly seeking ways to physically immerse myself in the creative process. Themes of femininity, sensuality, and documentary images that connect human experiences inspire my art practice.
Even though we live in a digital world, I prefer the slower, more deliberate practice of film photography. The slower pace and intuitive nature of working with film help me capture remarkable moments in life. The documentary images I create embrace the candid ‘in-between’ moments. My projects often involve testing the limits of other mediums such as weaving, painting, ceramics, and printmaking. For example, in my weavings, I often use natural materials, and earthly elements such as leaves, branches, corn husks, etc., and I enjoy exploring unconventional uses.
My artwork is a journey of self-discovery, expressing variations of the female form and creative anatomical references to feminine energy. I also explore human relationships with nature, storytelling, identity, heritage, ancestry, and connection to land. These subjects are important to me because they prompt internal reflection on the purpose of my art and its connection to the world.
Artists such as Ana Mendieta, Carlota Guerrero, Analia Saban, and Mary Ellen Mark inspire my practice. I admire these artists for their ability to use various mediums in their practice and I can personally relate to the feminism represented in their works. Creating art is when I feel most in tune with my abilities and it helps deepen my connection to the world around me. As an artist, I seek experiences that help me share my skills in a tactile and emotive way.
